Suggestions for features for Dotsub

Hi everyone,

On this thread we can share suggestions for features that we'd like to see added to Dotsub's functionality. Once we collect a list of suggestions for improvements, we can send that to the Dotsub support and let them know that these are suggestions for them that the whole international linguistic team came up with. If it comes from a global team of translators from many languages, it can be interesting for them to see what is most needed, and also it could have more weigh.

I'll start with two important features that I'd like to see:
a) the ability to have different timestamps (or time codes) for the different language translations of the same video;
b) the ability to insert manual line breaks.

What are some of the features you'd like to see? Share them here! :)

When I type this:
http://dev.dotsub.com/api/tzmofficial/tzmofficial/media/

which I expect should give me a bunch of general info about our videos in JSON format, I'm redirected to:
http://dev.dotsub.com/login

I suppose we should have a dev account for this to work.

Little bug: when the title of a video contains double quotes and you enter the permissions, information or translation page for that video, its title isn't displayed properly (it stops wherever the first double quotes are found).

General remark: maybe it's a little overkill to send 3 emails for each upload we make.

OK. Here we start.

1) The video, if possible, should be loaded from the source site and not re-uploaded in the dotsub. Waste of resources. If not
2) Ability for common users to upload unlimited videos and with no size or time restrictions (or the restrictions to be almost unlimited, eg 10 hours or 2GB). This is needed when a video is considered to be important for a chapter, and needs to be transcribed and translated quickly, and the tzmofficial doesn't want it or has no the time to upload it, then a common user should do.
3) When pressing on the time of the subtitles, the video is not playing at the specific time. It stucks.
4) Support for more than one subtitle streams. Maybe one with the main subtitles and another one with titles, events etc, in order for English people
5) Ability to directly upload an .srt with different timecodes.
6) Ability to insert manual line breaks.
7) Create version history in order for user job not to be destroyed.
8) Finalize translation. I don't know if the owner has that ability, but if not, the he should be.

That's for now.
I'm sure more will come on the way.
I have some in thought but they are just thoughts and not yet a comprehensive opinion/proposal.

This one works for me. You have to wait until the video loads (buffers) to that point.

Extras:
I have never seen the transcription interface real time, but if not implemented I would like to see those abilities added
1) Graphical and Text based creation of timestamps. Now, as far as I know, it is only text based.
2) Ability to split a subtitle or join subtitles with corresponding changes in timestamps and additional changes in all the translations.
3) Character analysis in order to easy check if the 70 character limit is exceeded or not. Must be available and to translation interface
4) Time analysis in order to easy check the 1.5 seconds duration limit. Must be available and to the translation interface.

Also some thoughts that maybe need further discussion.
Ability to split in chunks the translation effort. For example per 100 subtitles or per 10 minutes of video. That way more people can work on the "same" subtitle.
Rollback ability to the "owner" of the video.
I don't know what the intentions of the Dotsub is, but I suppose they don't want to be another video upload site. They just want to be a subtitle site. If that is the case, then they should consider leaving the streaming of the video for the dedicated sites (like youtube) and focus on creating an overlay to that, like the Amara toolbar. It can be something like that or a plugin in the major browsers or something else.

We have a Dev account. You just needed to be logged into the dev area before clicking on that to see that the page no longer exists. :giggle:
I've hunted all over and it doesn't seem to be available anymore. I'll ask dS about it in the next meeting.
