Making snippets out of our materials -ZDay 2012 - Matt Berkowitz - Updating Human Values

UPDATE ON THIS PROJECT. VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE AND SUBTITLES COMPLETED AND AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD IN THIS POST'S ATTACHMENTS:
Human Nature - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4cbtLK0VNk

Free will - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t5S5LU6yOo

Competition - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLDD7kMgtxU

Hi guys, I'm starting to make snippets from Matt's video.
I'm only using open source software:
Avidemux for cut/join segments
Audacity for audio extract and improvement.
Openshot and Pitivi for encoding.

Til now, i've made 2 samples with openshot
one webm file with 21mb (wierd) and one mp4 file with 175mb
and i didn't notice any major loss of quality (same resolution).

Here, take a look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vxL2DvDMN8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMj1ZdP7YfI

Pitivi seems to have some bugs (sometimes it freezes at 99%).
I'm not sure if it freezes only with webm or both. (running a mp4 test now).
Pitivi has some cool effects like fading audio/video ( i think openshot too, but i've to explore it).

Do you think it's worth doing all this encoding or just use direct stream copy?
(i think i can make the same samples with only stream copy)
I'd like to know too if you know other cool software i can use
and your opinion about this. You can give some tips too.

btw, OpenShot (excellent one, i also use it), Avidemux, Audacity and Pitivi are software libre, not exactly "open source":
- http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-software-for-freedom.html
- http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-sourc…-the-point.html

anyway, it is excellent that you are using these tools, since they are 100% compatible with RBE! \o/ (and as well, i strongly recommend everyone else that advocate RBE-based initiatives to advocate software libre as well! :) ) - i imagine that soon we all will be using software libre, and this is really amazing! :)

That's right, free software is the right word, although Audacity is free and open too.

Another test done. Getting better each time.
Human Nature by Matt.

I think i'll stick to Openshot and mp4 as video container.
With webm, video is much smaller in size, but mp4 has a little more quality.
Quality wins.

Nice!! I guess we will cut the cord with a Youtube Portuguese channel translation and upload ah? :D

Can you cut and synch the SRTs for the videos, safir25? So they serve as templates for all languages? I am still thinking where we could promote them after, so they become more visible. Maybe on the 1st post if I edit it  . Any suggestions?

The subtitle for the snippet "Free Will" was hard to read in the 1st 2 strings. So I adjusted it and substituted the uploads in this thread. I have also done the SRTs for the Portuguese version, soon in a youtube channel close to you ;)

Right now I am uploading these videos to the LTI channel, so we have a place to add the translations of all those who don't have a language channel yet.
