How to timeshift with VisualSubSync (Windows)

This thread is open for us to talk about the making of a video tutorial about timeshifting.

I made a first version, which focused specifically on how to handle the timeshifting program, we'll need another tutorial to cover video and subtitle download.

I don't remember receiving any feedback on this one (maybe you did Nomada, but I don't remember what you said :S)

It looks good to me, this tutorial. It covers everything I can think of. But there is nothing like having feedback from someone that never used it before :tonguer:

Here is some feedback...
This was a situation that http://forum.linguisticteam.org/user/462-dimi/ had doubts with and later suggested we add the specific actions on string restructuring to the tutorial. Example:
If a string is too long, either in time or characters, we can try to split it in 2 or transfer some text to the next strings.
One way is to put the play line where I want to split a string and use the mouse righ-click => split, which creates 2 strings with the full text on both and then i delete the text that is too much in each one. The opposite situation, 2 too small strings or 2 strings that when merged wont be too long but actually more comfortable to read, i select them both on the strings list and use the mouse right-click => merge.

@brunodc: @nomada:

Big thanks for making the tutorial!

What video file format are you guys using in VisualSubSync? I know that you use MP4 in the video. But for me, it seems to have problems with MP4. If I use that it doesn't find an audio stream. I used KeepVid to fetch the video from YouTube. I've also tried the other formats available there using that tool and I've tried a video only with a audio only file. KeepVid seems to like Microsoft made formats more than others - maybe you know of any other programs similar to KeepVid that can download in Microsoft formats (like AVI)?

I guess it's possible to timeshift without video, but obviously it's a nice addition ;) I'm trying to timeshift this video, but so far I've wasted a lot of time with technicalities.

Thankful for any help!

EDIT: Or should I take a different approach altogether? Should I use another program than VisualSubSync?

One of the advantage of VSS is that it uses whatever video decoder the system uses without doing any processing of its own. So if you're able to tweak the system in the right way, VSS will find what it needs.

This page can help: http://www.visualsubsync.org/tutorials/codecs

point N°8 in particular

Thanks, Bruno!

I needed to install K-Lite Codec Pack. I can use the MP4 file now and everything works.
