TVP Website - Interview - translation questions

Hi,

There's a sentence in the interview with Jacque Fresco in TVP's site that I'm not sure I fully understand. Here's the whole question and the answer:

- You've been compared with DaVinci. How does it feel? Does this make you feel pressured to meet these expectations?

- I don’t think about this comparison at all. I am not pressured to meet any expectation except that which is available to me. If people support the project, then it will occur. If they fail to do so, we will continue with our current problems. It is not up to me. All I am able to do at this time is to present a possible alternative. The future of sustaining our species depends on the actions we take today.

I feel that I have advantages greater than Da Vinci’s such as access to more information, materials, and methods.

The sentence that's bothering me is: "I am not pressured to meet any expectation except that which is available to me". Can somebody rephrase it?

Thanks.

Here's how I understand it :

I don't feel that I have to meet anybody's expectations because I am simply working with the resources that I have at my disposal.

I agree. Many of the more difficult terms & phrases will require the person answering to actually see &/or hear it in context, so it's important to include a link & the timestamp so that, if needed, they can do that ahead of replying. ^^

Lizzie clearly stated the context and the source, it's just a matter of actually reading what he posted... :whistling:

It's question #7 of the Jacque Fresco Interview on the Venus Project website.

Sorry...
complete misunderstanding of mine...
that was no case of translation (audio/video->text) as Ithought it'd be, but comprehension.
and I agree fully: a hard one to understand...

Bruno's suggestion seems reasonable and I'm gonna translate in this sense, unless someone gives another interpretation.

And one other question from the same interview:

- Your work is really wide-ranging and covers many fields like drawing, small-scale models, 3D graphic art, architecture, writing, cinematography, and engineering; I’d like to know, how do you live the properties of these instruments?

- I apply all of these different disciplines to environmental design using the present means available for global social arrangements, but I don’t see my solutions and designs as final frontiers.

This time the interviewer isn't being quite clear. How do you understand "how do you live the properties of these instruments"?

It can be found here, question #18.

We can't make sense of this question, maybe because it doesn't make sense :D. I think I'd invent something, like :

How do you use this wealth of diversified knowledge in your current works ?

After staring at this for a while, I think I have a 'workable' rephrasing.

"I am not pressured to meet anyone else's expectations. I can only attempt to meet my own expectations of myself."

I sent the question to Roxanne to be put in front of Jacque. She may reply back with a simple answer or she could put Jacque on the headset to expand upon it. Either way, I'll report the result back here.

Ray got ahold of Jacque and Roxanne, and here's what they had to say :

About question #18 ("how do you live the properties of these instruments"?), Jacque said :

Quoted

Yes we get many interviewers where english is not their first language and we have to do a lot of guessing
your guess is as good as mine.

and then Jacque rephrased it as :

Quoted

How do you balance all of these disciplines?

The clarification regarding question #7 (I am not pressured to meet any expectation except that which is available to me.) is (Roxanne's words) :

Quoted

Ok this is what he meant. He only has pressure to meet expectation when he is committed to do projects that are commissioned by others. But the rest of the paragraph is not related to that train of thought so we think “except that which is available to me”. Should be deleted. Jacque was guessing at this as well because he doesn’t remember what he was thinking at the time.

Ray has deleted that particular sentence from the interview on the TVP website, Pootle is going to autorepair itself when the next round of update will be applied there.

And as an update on that last part, I hope to get through and activate the TVP website updates by the end of this week/weekend. I will make a post to the main Help Desk section about this to provide much more detail.
