OK guys, the new project has been created. All the essays will be added gradually.

All the languages that had some translation are still available in the old project: Orientation Guide 2012 [replaced by TZM Defined] | Projects | Linguistic Team International Pootle Project

Please bring over your translations to the new project and give a yell so we can delete the old project. It's important that you do this so that we don't have duplication of efforts (having two locations to work in is always troublesome).

To prevent that potential duplication (and anyone wasting their time & energy), we can switch everyone in the old version over to View-only, once the new one is in place and active for all languages. ;)

The trick for this is to Copy each individual section out of the original ODT and directly into its own ODT file, followed by a "Save As" of that ODT file into HTML. OpenOffice automatically generates the references within the file to which they belong.
I'm looking for the original ODT file for TZM Defined. Where can I get it?

@johnwang:
The formats made available on the TZM website are the ones that Peter put out for Creative Commons use. If you need a format that is not represented there, you'll need to contact Peter (peter@thezeitgeistmovement.com) directly to request it. We don't have any authority to pass out other formats.

@Ray:

Thanks for your answer. I think my friend already emailed TZM about this and they didn't get back to him but I'll relay your suggestion.

Just a heads up to people working with documents, Creative Commons licenses only apply to document contents and not any particular document format. To protect a document in a specific format in a way that will hold up in court you'll need some other kind of license designed to do that, or you can go traditional and use all rights reserved copyright then issue explicit written permission on a per-case basis. The CC FAQ has some details (emphasis mine):

Quoted

What do the terms and conditions of a CC license apply to?

Although CC licenses get attached to tangible works (such as photos and novels), the license terms and conditions apply to the licensor’s copyright in the licensed material. The public is granted “permission to exercise” those rights in any medium or format. It is the expression that is protected by copyright and covered by the licenses, not any particular medium or format in which the expression is manifested. This means, for example, that a CC license applied to a digitized copy of a novel grants the public permission under copyright to use a print version of the same novel on the same terms and conditions (though you may have to purchase the print version from a bookstore).

Can I take a CC-licensed work and use it in a different format?

Yes. When any of the six CC licenses is applied to material, licensees are granted permission to use the material as the license allows, whatever the media or format chosen by the user when it is used or distributed further. This is true even in our NoDerivatives licenses. This is one of a very few default rules established in our licenses, to harmonize what may be different outcomes depending on where CC-licensed material is reused and what jurisdiction’s copyright law applies.

This means, for example, that even if a creator distributes a work in digital format, you have permission to print and share a hard copy of the same work.

When I release my work under a CC license in one format (e.g., .pdf), can I restrict licensees from changing it to or using it in other formats?

No. CC licenses grant permission to use the licensed material in any media or format regardless of the format in which it has been made available. This is true even if you have applied a NoDerivatives license to your work. Once a CC license is applied to a work in one format or medium, a licensee may use the same work in any other format or medium without violating the licensor’s copyright.

Thanks for the info, johnwang.

LTI does not (yet) create original materials or change licences for the derivative works that we create here, so the above information needs to be (and probably is) understood by the folks & entities that create the originals. Since these are not our originals, we simply stay out of any/all copyright discussions unless it directly affects the global distribution abilities of the derivative works we create. In other words, we have full authority to make use of and derive the official transcriptions & translated works of all of the materials within our care, but we do not have any authority over the originator's copyright choices or the authority to pass out any original formats provided to us that have not also been made publicly available by the source.

Hi there :)

I started translating the 'TZM Global Documents and Chapters Guide' in pootle today, and in the introduction it recommends that you read The Zeitgeist Movement Orientation Guide. As I understand it, 'TZM Defined' is replacing this document, so the guide should be changed accordingly. Probably not a high priority, I just thought I'd point it out, in case no one else noticed or thought of it :)

For anyone waiting for a flag to drop to get the race started, I suppose this is it.

The Index and first two parts (half of the book) are now in Pootle and open for translating. The last two parts will be added individually once they are fully prepped (a lengthy process, so please be patient if you 'out-race' me). ;)

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if there is a way we could get the source version of TZM Defined, meaning the .odt (hoping it's not .doc ^^) so we can facilitate the creation of the file on our side (for every chapter I mean).

Also, same question but for the source of the "grey" cover of the book ?

Thanks

What file do you want to create? A PDF?

About the cover, I'm afraid I can't help there.

Hi

I'm working on the danish translation, and I have created a script to very quickly process the po files to a decent looking pdf. The images are of cause not included as well as the content of tzmd_0.po becasue the TOC and initial stuff in not as "systematic" as the rest of the text.

https://github.com/sgh/tzm-po2tex

the script falls back to english for the strings that are not translated. so basically it will work for any language.

Going forward - a more feasible solution would be to migrate the books to latex (or some other typesetting language) before importing them into pootle. That way it's a mere concatenation of all strings to be able to produce the final book.

Try it out - tell me what you think :)
