Thank you very much. I cannot say that I have, I simply read the guidelines. In the notes I stated that I was certain that my transciption was not professional. I cannot thank you enough for the re-assuring compliment (was getting ready to re-time this.)

I have done a little video editing which has unfortunately caused "cuts" on t.v. to feel like someone waving a black cloth in-front of my eyes. Even this transcription seemed too unnatural and I wanted to reduce the difference to 50-75ms in some cases (you'll find that I compromised, leaving several lines at the 100ms minimum if it was too difficult for me to watch.)

I believe that was too much of an explanation on my part. However, the more you know about my techniques, the better you can correct them and the more harmonious our work may be.

Another tip for you my friend: sometimes, despite giving it our best shot, we overlook some little mistakes that are difficult to see with the naked eye, which is why we have a tool that assesses the quality of our work in the light of the guidelines

Here it is

What you need to do is to go to the transcription window on dotSUB (where you insert and adjust the subtitles) and you should see a "Export transcription" button which allows you to download a subtitle file containing all of your work. You store it in your hard drive, and go to the link above, where you use the browse button to fetch that same file you just downloaded.

You then click on "analyze this", and it'll tell you about some subtitle lines (what we call strings) that can be improved. Sometimes, we have no choice but to leave some strings in a way that doesn't respect the guidelines and it's fine, the guidelines are not an exact science!

About the gaps : we have to make sure that 100ms is the absolute minimum we leave between strings, because the display method varies according to the software we use to show the subtitles so the user experience might vary from one program to the other, not to mention that most people's brains need that minimal gap there to notice that there's new text to read. Sometimes it looks obvious, but if it just so happens that the next string contains exactly the same number of characters, it might be very hard to notice!
