That was a method for keeping people to behave

They had to pledge obedience to the old man, whatever he wanted,

What is the meanig of "They all did it"? All kings were doing the same or all people were doing whatever the king orders?

What was made easy by a wife being obedient? And why they wouldn't protest their social status? I guess "the old man" here is her husband?

1) "They all did it" means that the whole community followed the king's orders.
If the wife protested her "state of being" she would probably be beheaded. That she's obedient makes life "simpler" for the others, and therefore "easier". Not so much effort is needed to keep people in check if they are obedient. Several dissenting persons would potentially lead to chaos within the community. Chaos does not heed any orders from the king.
